Sogeri National School of Excellence welcomed a veteran astronaut in July 2024. The school’s Principal, Mr. Teddy Feria, officially met U.S. astronaut Marsha Ivins at the U.S. Embassy in Port Moresby, PNG.

Marsha Ivins, a veteran of five space missions, has spent a total of 55 days in space and returned to PNG to share insights about NASA’s extraordinary work. Did you know that fewer than 75 women have been to space? Meet this amazing pioneer as she returns to PNG—her first visit was in 1987. She now returns to Port Moresby and Lae to inspire future generations of girls and boys to dream big.

Ivins joined NASA in 1974 and was part of the astronaut class of 1984. She participated in five missions between 1990 and 2001, accumulating a total of 1,318 hours in space and completing over 4,500 orbits of the Earth.

During her visit to PNG, she will launch the Academy for Women Entrepreneurs program in Morobe, which provides training and networking opportunities for female business owners.
